Google Base Update

Google Base Update

Update 9/30:  Two more notes on this!  The first is that, as you have probably noticed, we've added to the "My Bonanzle" page a fairly detailed FAQ on all issues pertaining to the Google Base transition.  It's under "Popular Links" (or somesuch) near the middle of the page.  Note number two is that, after much tinkering, I have finally uncovered a way to work around the error that was preventing the last 10% of our booths from being registered.  The remaining booths are being registered for Base as I write this, within the next day or so their items should all be online.  All that leaves is creating a means so that you can get stats on your Google Base items.  After the initial transition traffic downturn, we've recovered to the point that we now have more traffic coming in than before the Google Base transition (and that's before the last 10% of booths are online), and Google Checkout reviews are being associated with Bonanzle sellers that signed up for Google Checkout.  All good things.

Update 9/24:  Good progress in the last couple days!  We're back up to about 90% of our pre-transition traffic volume, and about 90% of our feeds have been published.  We're still waiting on a couple minor tweaks from Google so that we can post the last 10% of booths; I'm also going to be fixing a bug on our side tomorrow that caused a few booths to have their items switched around.  But all in all, with Google's help, we're blazing the trail toward being what I believe is the first marketplace to get subaccounts setup and wholly working.  I'm expecting that in the next week or two we should be able to add the functionality to see some stats on your feed.  Oh, and to those that have been asking about how often the feed will be updated:  whenever one of your items changes (either by you updating your booth, or by you selling items)

Update 9/20:  We're still sitting at around 75-80% of feeds uploaded.  The remaining booths are being worked through with the help of Google.  We've also observed that the search placement for many items seems to have lowered from what it had been prior to the update; we are attempting to get further information on this.  Being that I believe we may be the first Google client using seller sub-accounts in this manner, it will surely be an iterative process to get everything up and going smoothly, but I'll continue to post updates here as we receive them.  Thanks again for your patience!

Update 9/18 10PM:  Now about 70% of feeds are uploaded, about 60% have been processed and are back online.  We're still working with Google to evaluate if the items are being placed as they should relative to the comparable items.  Hopefully we'll hear more back from them after the weekend.  In the meantime, you can visit the "My Bonanzle" page to see when your feed was last sent to Google.  If it is 9/17 or 9/18, then chances are it should only be a matter of time until you're back in Product search. I'll keep updating this as developments unfold in the processing and optimization of the transitioned items.  Sorry for any inconvenience this has caused, we've been strapped to our computers the last couple days trying to get all the loose ends wrinkled out for the new-style feeds.  (If you hadn't noticed on the changelist, you can now exclude your booth from having its items sent to Google on the Sell -> Advanced Options page, if you please).

Update 9/17 4PM:  Alright, thanks to Janna and the entire helpful Google Base team, booths are currently being re-uploaded to Google en masse.  We've currently created & uploaded about 10% of them in the last 5 hours.  If we're lucky, the GB servers might be a little speedier during non-peak hours, but if not, this would give us a worst-case scenario of all booths having their Google feed restored by around Saturday.  In the meantime, we'll be adding the option to opt out of having your items syndicated to GB in the near future.  Stay tuned...

Update 9/17 4AM:  The creation of accounts under the Bonanzle name is now underway.  We are actively working with Google to help iron a couple kinks out of the new upload process, but are optimistic that with a couple more minor modifications on their side we'll be able to get our items back up onto Google Products shortly.  This will remain our top priority until it is complete.

Original post:  I wanted to post a quick update with regards to our status transitioning to the Bonanzle-managed feeds for Google Base.  As of last night, we have completed and tested our revised system for creating seller sub-accounts under the Bonanzle name and uploading feeds directly to Google.  I have since contacted our friendly Google representative about how we can best make the transition from using individual feeds to the consolidated Bonanzle feed.

Upon receiving her response, we will do as we are told to make the transition as smooth as possible.  After we begin this process, it will probably take something in the neighborhood of a couple days to actually create accounts for our 20k+ sellers and upload feeds for all of them.   So, while we have completed everything necessary on our side to make this transition, there could potentially still be a few "in between" days over the next week where some items are not being submitted to Google, depending on whether Google is able to let us setup all of our seller accounts while many of the sellers still have their own accounts.  I'll try to remember to post a follow up here once they clarify how exactly they want the transition to work.

Also worth noting is that, now that all feeds wil be under "Bonanzle," we have been revising our exporter to tighten up the rules for permitting items into feeds.  We are striving to be a model Google citizen, so the less feeds that violate Google Program Policies, the better.  Here are some of the rules you'll need to keep in mind to have your items get submitted to Google:

  • Item must have a category, and that category must not be vehicles, powersports, or other car-related categories (those belong in a different type of feed, which we aren't generating)
  • Item can not be mod chips for games, or other prohibited items as outlined in their program policies
  • Item title/description can not contain any foul language
  • Item must have shipping setup within the US ("See description" is OK, but I believe Google will rank you higher if you specify a shipping cost)
  • Item can not be free
  • If multiple items are the same except for size, only one item will be submitted

As with above, we will continue to be in touch with Google to revise or add to these rules to ensure that we are compliant with their Program Policies.

Hope this helps clear up some of the questions that have been raised about the transition.  Once we hear back from Google, we plan to begin direct uploading seller feeds immediately.  Within the next couple weeks, we also plan to build in the ability to receive stats and information about the status of your feed.

Does this mean that my auto parts won’t be searchable on google?

fairdeals4u says: 09/16/09 at 12:31:15

WOW no free items?

oshunspirit1 says: 09/16/09 at 12:33:29

Will “freebies” cause problems or simply be excluded from the feed? Shall we remove them from the booths?

driver211 says: 09/16/09 at 12:39:22

I would think putting 0.00 in the price area would work for a free item wouldn’t it?

DiaperCakeDesigns says: 09/16/09 at 12:45:27

Thanks for the great update, nice to know that were not going to be left in the dark, thanks for all your hard work. you Guyz ROCK!!!

Griffengarb says: 09/16/09 at 12:47:37

Quote:Google is able to let us setup all of our seller accounts while many of the sellers still have their own accounts". Un-quote

Does this mean we have to delete out google base accounts? Seems like most have been disapproved and not active and not showing in a search. Is that what you mean by Seller Accounts?

Good going… and good luck with the big transition! though don’t know if luck prevails here or pure knowledge by you and the men!
Either way you have it all going on!

bharding says: 09/16/09 at 13:02:32

All of the things I listed (Freebies, etc.) can remain in your booths no problem, they’ll just be automatically omitted when we generate your Google feed.

SunflowerAntics says: 09/16/09 at 13:09:10

I have been away for a week. On Sept 14th all of my google feeds were disapproved as they are now. I just want to make sure that this is part of what you need to do to upload us as a group, and not something that I have done.

As always you guys are doing wonderful. Thanks for all of your hard work

So, if item cannot be “free” what do we do about freebies?

azirishkids says: 09/16/09 at 16:03:11

On Sept 16th all of our google feeds were disapproved. We just want to make sure that this is part of what you need to do to upload us as a group, and not something that we have done.
Thanks so much for your information, ahead of time….You guys are doing a great job and we are very happy being part of the Bonanzle “family”!!

kayceestudios says: 09/16/09 at 16:12:14

Freebies can be “free”, and remain in your booth here, they just won’t show up in Google product search, that’s all.

I completely agree

treasuresgoround says: 09/16/09 at 20:46:03

Way to go!

It says above that if multiple listings are found that are similar other than size they will be sent to google as 1 item. Does this apply to graphic design where all banners are the same size and description but are different designs. The titles will be different, but the description is almost identical.

Thanks for staying on top of this!

baileysmom74 says: 09/16/09 at 20:55:18

Item can not be free

It’s a good thing I’m here to sell and not give away things for free! You’re a rock star, Bill!

nexusanime says: 09/17/09 at 00:17:42

“If multiple items are the same except for size, only one item will be submitted”

I’m a little confused by this. If items are different sizes but everything else is the same why wouldn’t they be considered different items? There’s likely to be different price points in this case.

If someone has, say, cookies for sale and has a batch of 12 for $5 and a batch of 24 for $8, is this saying Google won’t consider these different items?

SpyHeart says: 09/17/09 at 01:24:29

STBThreadworks says: 09/17/09 at 16:17:39

Bill, sorry if this is repeating an already answered question, but looking forward into the future … how often will this Bonanzle feed load up to GB? We have ours set for weekly. Will this be a daily, weekly, monthly feed?

BTW, congrats on a job well done.

ZiggyZool says: 09/17/09 at 17:27:02

Excellent news on the feed frequency Bill

Thanks so much for all the work to get this done as quickly as possible. I have noticed the times you are posting your updates – you must be surviving on catnaps and delivery pizza – not much time in there for real sleep or meals.

CrossStitchNerd says: 09/17/09 at 22:33:21

Thank you soo much for the update! One question though…. I’m still rather new here and haven’t yet had a sale. Because of finances being the way they are, I cannot yet to afford plus or premium membership. As a Standard Member, will Bonanzle still include a seller such as me in the Google feeds?? Please let me know.

Thanks again on the awesome work you are all doing.

Cool .. Feeds are being uploaded to Base. ANd way to go on branding us Bill.! Not all sites are so good at allowing their sellers their individual branding.

How will I know when my items are in Google Base?

almighty378 says: 09/18/09 at 09:54:19

My items are still not showing in Google Base. What should I do? Thanks.

BookbinEtc says: 09/18/09 at 11:08:25

Do nothing – they will show when they show. Bill is working on getting everyone’s feed up, and I believe the last blog update (top of this page), said he hopes to have all feeds up by Saturday.

bsdgordon – Go to google.com and click Shopping at the top of page. Enter keywords for one of your items, and see where it comes up.

Bill, Mark, Tom, and all the rest of the team – THANK YOU!

Yes, I’m yelling! lol :P

STBThreadworks says: 09/18/09 at 11:38:39

WOW, Bill. That is awesome! I just did a bunch of changes, taking out some titles that were in caps. This sounds like a drastic improvement over the past Google feeds!

Thank you Bonanzle team for all of your hard work.
I have not been on bonanzle like I used to…my son had a bad accident at his fb game. Needless to say I am clueless as to why all of my feeds are not published…disapproved…I do not have freebies in my booth…never had a problem before.
Are just the paying members items being feed to google?
TIA

ANightOwl says: 09/19/09 at 03:26:23

Thanks for the continuing updates. Looks like your “by around Saturday” prediction for all the feeds to be restored is on the mark. Excellent!

NewBaybug says: 09/19/09 at 09:14:43

My Google Base gives a date of 9/19 at 8 a.m. and still says the same thing… “Internal error, feed was not fully processed” and there is nothing published?

Hourglass says: 09/19/09 at 18:49:08

I appreciate the updates ~ and the fast work! Thanks so much!

TanBarn says: 09/19/09 at 19:43:52

Thanks for the update. Was getting a little wacked out about notices from Google Base saying nothing was being uploaded.

TheUniqueItems says: 09/20/09 at 05:34:01

None of my items have been loaded as of yet. It keep reading “feed error” I am confused as to what is going. I tried to change the time for the feed from weekly to daily and it said something about a valid website address needed when that address is the address I had for all previous feeds from bonanzle. Utterly confused.

TheUniqueItems says: 09/20/09 at 05:39:55

Google setting for regular feed doesn’t even recognize the web page given by bonanzle and pasted into the field as valid.

phoenix2000us says: 09/20/09 at 07:24:43

I keep getting the “No items inserted” email as well. It’s discouraging.

StarsTreasureBox says: 09/20/09 at 11:46:18

Is this why my feed is suddenly disapprove without any prior emails from google?

STBThreadworks says: 09/20/09 at 16:22:09

I’m still grinning about a thread somewhere else where the seller’s items aren’t showing up in Goggle search.

katie says: 09/20/09 at 16:50:34

i don’t see anywhere on “my Bonanzle” page where it mentions anything about when my feed was sent to Google. I only know that yesterday for a few hours, I was not able to list an item or edit an item. So far, I don’t see any of my products in a Google shopping search.

eyecatchingbeauty says: 09/20/09 at 20:13:12

“We’re still working with Google to evaluate if the items are being placed as they should relative to the comparable items”

What are you referring to – proper category or search position?

Would be fabulous if they could put me back on page 1 search results rather than dead last. It can take months to move back up.

Also, yesterday my items were back up with my booth name listed, however today they are all listed as though Bonanzle is the seller. Why did this change overnight? Is there not a way for the listings to be listed under my Booth name with or without Bonanzle included?

DiaperCakeDesigns says: 09/21/09 at 06:26:13

Thanks Guyz for all your hard work and dedication. One quick question. If we have our own website and are selling the same items here will they go thru the google upload? I listed the same diaper cakes from my website store but have changed the titles here on Bonanzle so that they are the same as my website, will this keep my items from uploading?

StarvingPackrats says: 09/21/09 at 06:52:07

Bill: Thanks so much for these updates. It gives a great peace of mind to know what is going on with Google.

I noticed the same thing with the visibility in the search results; not nearly as fabulous as it had been prior to the switch over. I am confident, based on the experiences I’ve had here thus far, that you will get to the bottom of it.

Thanks for your perfectionism and driven spirit.

AlmasAttic says: 09/21/09 at 07:49:28

thanks again for all the time you are devoting to this Bill, and for the regular updates

BookbinEtc says: 09/21/09 at 08:37:44

For everyone who hasn’t actually READ all the info.

Stop worrying about your feed – it’s never going to upload again. That Google Base feed is dead. Bill is now uploading your Google feed site-wide, as opposed to us having to do it individually. Isn’t that awesome?!

If you are still getting Google notices about disapprovals – sign in to Google Base and shut off your notifications. Your feed is never going to be approved through that process again.

For those worried about search placement, it sounds like we’re lowered because of the multiple feeds from the site. Once the other marketplaces get their you-know-what together and start feeding, we should move up where we belong.

Bill – thanks so much for the keeping us informed!

Foxy_Lady_Boutique says: 09/21/09 at 11:18:32

Thank you for the update Bill, You guys are amazing.

eyecatchingbeauty says: 09/21/09 at 14:38:18

“For those worried about search placement, it sounds like we’re lowered because of the multiple feeds from the site. Once the other marketplaces get their you-know-what together and start feeding, we should move up where we belong.”

Our placement is lower because as far as Google is concerned we are brand new listings. Even though we have had our items listed before Bonanzle has never had items listed (well not since last year). We have to climb back up just like we did the first time we listed. I am not behind the listings of only other marketplaces I am behind everyone.

Aside from that eCrater, AM, eBid, iOffer, eBay and I’m sure others were already submitting a site feed so they already have their you know what together. So I will be behind these sellers until Bonanzle “earns” its way back to page 1.

I have not only lost placement in Google shopping I have lost position in Google’s organic search as well.

I’m pretty peeved with Google right now.

tillingtraders says: 09/21/09 at 15:07:40

We are coming up high in Google Shopping when searching for nearly exact titles. But, it does not list our booth name, just Bonanzle. Is that how this mass file will show our items, Bill?

eyecatchingbeauty says: 09/21/09 at 18:59:49

Well I don’t usually use exact title I try to use various keywords that someone might use to do a search. However, even using basically exact titles I am not on page one.

bsdgordon says: 09/22/09 at 07:58:11

Some of my items are there now. But my new listing from yesterday and the day before are not. How often will they be uploading our items.

just4barbie says: 09/23/09 at 12:21:39

I just checked my Google account. My last upload date was Sept. 18 and the status is “Internal error, feed was not fully processed”. It will happen soon, I’m sure.

shellsshowcase says: 09/23/09 at 14:09:18

shellsshowcase says: 09/23/09 at 14:20:02

Okay…answer me this. The status in Google base is “No items inserted”. Why would I have that status?

StatMan19 says: 09/23/09 at 15:55:09

My items used to all be searchable through google base, but now mine say “No items inserted”- hopefully it’ll be back to normal soon

biblioboy says: 09/23/09 at 16:07:53

Hello,
Your booth last sent items to Google Base on 09/22/09. Nice!
No not so nice as none of the items I have searched for on Google turn up under Bonanzle but show on other sites I list on. Google canceled my e-bay feed but my e-bay listing are still showing up on in every Google search. Listing from other smaller sites still showing up as well. I know you guys are working hard but showing me my listing have been sent to Google but when I search nothing shows from Bonanzle at all this is not encouraging. Sales are slow enough without losing Google base. Is there anything we as sellers can do to help?/ I mean besides not complaining. If I did not say it Thanks for all your hard work.
Just need to vent,
Stephen

katie says: 09/23/09 at 18:24:27

To shellsshowcase:
On the “My Bonanzle” page under fast facts shows whether your items have been uploaded. I didn’t know where it was either, until yesterday, when it said none of my items have been uploaded yet. As of today, no change.

bharding says: 09/24/09 at 01:21:09

@StatMan & @shellsshowcase: Your items aren’t managed through your personal account anymore, so Google isn’t going to report to you that your items are published. This is normal. All items are now being published through one Bonanzle account.

@Biblioboy: Just as was the case with individual feeds, there is a lag time between when an item is uploaded and when it actually becomes available for search in Google Products. Chances are that within the next day or two (if not already) your items should surface in Google Products.

@Katie: You may be one of the unlucky 10% whose booth can’t be registered due to a Google tweak that is awaiting implementation. We’re giving Google all the details possible to help them track this down.

Thanks for the update Bill. Most of my items are up and running but I guess my CuteBaby booth is in that 10% Sigh… Oh well, I guess someone had to process last

Thanks so much for you tireless efforts to get us up and running in GPS way ahead of the deadline – I would much rather be out of search now than in early December!

TheUniqueItems says: 09/24/09 at 04:08:55

How do we know if our items are up and running? What do we check because my data feed is not accepting from Bonanzle. It shut down basically

SunflowerAntics says: 09/24/09 at 09:41:18

Thank you Bill! I don’t know of any other site that Google could work with on this! I don’t think they have the ‘geek’ for the job like we do! You ROCK Bill!

Please forgive my nubie questions. Can anyone answer this for me…In the Bonanazle help pages about messaging through your Instant Messaging program when you’re not logged into Bonanzle, it states…“and any message you send from your instant messenging program will show up in your booth for all to see.” Do my messages to others (outside of Bonanzle) show up in my booth? Seems like a stupid question, but I wonder….

shellsshowcase says: 09/25/09 at 20:43:03

to Katie….Thanks. I found it and it says my items were uploaded today…yea!

StatMan19 says: 09/26/09 at 14:22:01

I recently signed into googlebase and it’s still down for me. If there’s anything I need to do besides just waiting for the feeds to fix, please let me know…

tbklover says: 09/28/09 at 05:15:04

This makes nearly 3 weeks that we are also down with little views and virtually no sales. Its not right Google takes down the feeds and then tells you; you have until 1 December to get it done; meanwhile your marketplace is not searchable!!!

Some of us really need this money too.

tbklover says: 09/28/09 at 09:00:32

We noticed the multiple items are the same except for size; only one gets submitted. That is unfair!!! You can have the same shirt in multiple sizes yet only one gets into the feed? We sell craft items that come in 7 sizes and a bunch of shapes; yet if we have the same one in different sizes; they only submit one yet people use the different sizes for different reasons!!!

Same thing with many other items yet google only wants one in because its the same item? When its really not!!!

choiceinfo says: 09/28/09 at 15:10:16

I just logged into my Google account – there are NO items active or published – it is blank. This is the 3rd week there were no items inserted – what do I need to do to get my items listed? Please help!

choiceinfo says: 09/28/09 at 15:52:07

Question – so with the recent changes in Google BAse, we won’t see our individual items listed? But we will see them if we do a search on Google? Do we need to close our Google Base accounts? I’m a little confused about all these changes – anyone able to help?

Thanks – ChoiceInfo

katie says: 09/29/09 at 05:28:57

I am confused also about our individual Google Base accounts. Are we supposed to close them ourselves, or does Google close them for us?

tbklover says: 09/29/09 at 06:49:25

Google already deactivated alot of them so if yours is still up; yours will be next.

Bill; can we please get an ETA as to when the 10 % is going to be done? and what about the identical items but the size is different. Our craft supplies are all like this and people do mix and match when they buy.

ANightOwl says: 09/30/09 at 00:04:33

If you go to your “My Bonanzle” Page you will see a new link that says “Read about the Google Base transition” http://www.bonanzle.com/site_help/booths_setup/google_base_faq it will answer most of your questions.

tbklover says: 09/30/09 at 06:17:15

Night Owl; no it does not!!! Already checked many times and there is no information as to when the last 10 % are being done and since we are in that group; we have a right to know.

Also has no information on when traits are going to be approved and since we worked so hard 3 months ago to have none approved; we are not going to be doing anything until we know we are going to get what we need via the submit form which is what we did before!!!

Lastly; there is the size issue for those of us who sell craft / miniature supplies and people use different sizes for things and now only one gets into the feed???

Three weeks of no views and few sales!!! People have a right to know whats going on!!!

tbklover says: 09/30/09 at 06:37:44

Just checked again; very few new traits and the funny thing is we have a bracelet one for many of our pins!!! Dont think that helps us any!!! Meanwhile; nothing for collectibles; dolls; craft books; etc; etc etc!!!

Another issue for us; since we sell craft supplies are we going to be allowed to have the same items on other sites? We dont drop ship but we are wondering if google will think they are duplicates? and as such disallow the feed?

mjzc59 says: 12/03/09 at 10:57:37

what is up how do I locate my items on google I have tried it all:/

Simply_Crystal says: 12/16/09 at 14:52:24

Did something change with Google Base recently? I rec’d a notification that my feed was ‘disapproved’ last weekend and I’ve manually created and uploaded 1 item feeds that continue to be ‘disapproved’. Anyone know what’s going on?
