This is a hand-carved Shona stone sculpture originating from Zimbabwe by the artist Temba Moyo. This piece belongs to the contemporary Shona Sculpture Movement of Zimbabwe, a globally renowned traditions-based stone-carving art form. Hand-carved from serpentine stone, a dense local mineral prized by Zimbabwean sculptors for its varied color layers and textural contrast. The artwork depicts multiple stylized, expressive African faces emerging organically from a single horizontal base of raw, unpolished stone. Shona art frequently explores relational and spiritual concepts such as family dynamics, ancestral protection, and unity. The artist combines highly polished, dark faces with a rough, chiseled texture on the surrounding rock base to emphasize the natural characteristics hidden inside the stone. These pieces were purchased originally from the late Aunt of one of my clients. She was the Director of the Peace Corps in Nepal and worked throughout Africa from the 1940s to the 1980s.
