Zimbabwe Hand-Carved Shona Tribe Serpentine Stone Abstract Sculpture by William Sachiti Measures 6 1/2" wide, 4" deep and 11" tall. This is a hand-carved Shona stone sculpture from Zimbabwe, featuring an abstract or figurative form crafted from polished dark serpentine set against a contrasting raw, unpolished stone base by sculptor William Sachiti. Shona artists traditionally work with indigenous hard stones like serpentine and springstone, leaving parts of the natural rock raw to highlight the transition between rough earth and smooth, polished art. Part of the renowned contemporary Zimbabwean stone-sculpting movement, these pieces often express deep spiritual, human, and modern abstract themes. These pieces were purchased originally from the late Aunt of one of my clients. She was the Director of the Peace Corps in Nepal and worked throughout Africa from the 1940s to the 1980s.
