Emerson Butawu African Shona Carved Serpentine Stone Sculpture Zimbabwe Measures 4 3/4" wide, 2 1/2" deep and 7 1/2" tall. This piece is a hand-carved Shona stone sculpture from Zimbabwe, commonly known as a "Lovers Embrace" design. Crafted from natural serpentine stone, featuring a rough, unpolished exterior and a smoothly polished abstract interior figure. Handcrafted by Emerson Butawu, the famous Shona stone carver in Zimbabwe, an Indigenous group renowned for centuries-old sculpting techniques that symbolize unity and harmony. Features an open-work cutout style showing figures cradled within an outer ring of raw stone. These pieces were purchased originally from the late Aunt of one of my clients. She was the Director of the Peace Corps in Nepal and worked throughout Africa from the 1940s to the 1980s.
