Everytime i add an item with several colors the listing creates 5 or 6 extra

Am I doing something wrong? Every time I create a listing with color variations, the listing ends up having 5 or 6 of the same colors listed. I have to go in and delete all the extra colors listed. Is there a way to avoid this? TIA
