Hurricane Reef
By Bryce Walton (from the inside cover)
"Captain Steven Harrison Birney, aqua-naut, officer in the rapidly growing Government Oceanographie Service" ?it was a career Steve had been dreaming of and planning for since he was a child. All summer he had been living on his uncle's island in the Florida Keys, diving in the translucent, blue-green waters of the Gulf Stream. Scully's Island was an oceanographer's paradise, and Steve's future depended on it.
In the undersea caves and canyons of the outer reefs he was collecting the coral, the shells, the strange sea plants and rare fish that he would present to the judges at the famous Marine Science Institute in Miami. If they approved of his summer's work, they would award him a full schol-arship. Steve would spend the rest of his life exploring the wonders of oceanspace.
But the sea is mysterious, unpredictable, exacting ? a place where sudden, freak devil tides and raging storms can wreak havoc on the most careful plans.
Before the summer was over, Steve would come to value his cousin Mako's brooding friendship and Uncle Scully's fierce, often foolish optimism. He would discover that his own flexibility and imagination were as important to a marine scientist as disci-pline, hard work, and courage.
Bryce Walton, who has himself experienced the astonishing beauty and the dangers of the sea, has written a wise and compelling story about the last, most challenging frontier on earth.?
