Item description
Natural Uranium Rock
CARNOTITE
Weight: 9.9 Oz. Radiation: 42,500 CPM (counts-per-minute)
$39.00 plus $12.80 shipping
This rock was found at a Jurassic Canyon
mine's rock pile, July 2025. Of the five types
of uranium minerals at Jurassic Canyon NM,
Carnotite is the most common. Carnotype is
found at nearly every uranium mining location on
Earth. At some locations, microscopically small
trace amounts of RADIUM are also found,
embedded in the Carnotite.
The YELLOW COLOR that is often seen on
Carnotite rocks is the natural color of uranium
oxide, U3-O8.
The outdated original name of this uranium
mining site was POISON CANYON, and this
name is likely still found on geological maps.
That name was first given to this area during
the 1920s, 30 years prior to the discovery of
uranium here in 1950. The term, Poison
Canyon, referred to NON-RADIOACTIVE toxic
minerals that are found in the soil: Loco
Weed, Arsenic, and Selenium. Those minerals
are toxic to farm animals if they graze on
plants that grow there; the animals' hair might
fall out, or miscarriages might occur with the
animals' pregnancies. Jurassic Canyon is more
accurate, both geologically and historically.
The nearby extinct volcano, Mount Taylor,
was active during the Jurassic Era, 200 million
to 148 million years ago. This ancient era also
hosted many varied species of dinosaurs that
were attracted by a large body of water,
Lake Ambrosia, located 3,000 ft beneath the
Barbara-J mine. Currently, there is a single-
lane road, in good condition, that leads from
the town of Grants to the summit of this long
long long extinct uranium volcano. The "mother
lode" of uranium is at the 3,000 ft depth, 600
ft thick, and it extends horizontally at depth
for six miles, extending directly beneath the
Jurassic Canyon and beneath Mount Taylor.
