Item description
Natural Uranium Rock
TYUYAMUNITE
Weight: 1.8 oz. Radioactivity: 29,400 CPM
$18.00 plus $9,50 shipping
via "Ground Advantage"
This rock was found at Jurassic Canyon, near
Grants NM, during April 2025. I was
accompanied by a rockhound uranium collector
from Oregon, during a four-day rock collecting
visit. The visitor had flown to Albuquerque
for this rockhounding adventure. The airlines
are strict in banning the carrying of radioactive
materials in luggage, so the visitor mailed his
rocks back to his home, then traveled with
family via his airline. All the mailed boxes
arrived safely when the family returned home.
Visitors often ask how strong the background
radiation is at the uranium field. Normal
background is 50-75 CPM, and at the Jurassic
Canyon, the background is about 100-150 cpm.
Its double the normal background rate, but
this is no crisis! By comparison, in December
2024, I brought a geiger counter with me
on an American Airlines flight, cruising at
33,000 ft altitude. The measured radiation at
my window seat was 950 CPM, about 13
TIMES the normal radiation at the ground
surface. Astronauts at the ISS International
Space Station experience cosmic gamma
radiation that is 240 times more intense than
background surface radiation. Astronauts who
travel to Red Planet Mars soon, will experience
surface ratiation that is 700 times stronger
than what we get on the Earth's surface!
