Travel to the Middle East has been a part of the lives of Oriental Institute Faculty and friends since before the Institute's creation in 1919. Margaret Bell Cameron was Chairman of the Visiting Committee from 1971 through 1990. She was elected a Trustee of the University of Chicago in 1971. And remained a Life Trustee until her death in early 2000. She made her journey to the Middle East almost fifty years ago and shared her experiences and her sketches with family and friends, including the Institute. We publish them now to honor her memory and to share her impressions of a world that has passed from view.
