I have what seems to be an old film reel of the HCMS Nipigon minesweeper ship (the label on the film can says only “Nipigon 1941”). I know that the ship was commissioned in 1941, but have no way of determining what exactly is on the reel (I’ve looked at a short length of film to determine the condition, but am kinda scared to handle the film itself).

You could just use cotton gloves and a loop, both pretty easy to find at a local camera shop. This way you preserve the film as well as being able to see it more clearly. (I do this with negatives and slides)Once you determine what appears to be on the film you may have to contact the Canadian Navy to verify authenticity though…

There should be a film expert in your area, not sure where you are located, but almost every big city has one. People get their home movies put on DVD, etc. all the time. Check at your local college also, their film making class might be interested in assisting you as a project, you can find out what is on your film and the kiddos learn something about old technology.
Best of luck to you.

Get two pieces of wood and drill a 5/16ths hole in each. Jam a pencil in them and put them 2 feet apart with a halfway decent scanner in between ’em. Place the movie reel on the left and run the film over the bed of the scanner.
Use a ribbon spool from a dollar store dumpster to advance the film, you’ll need to glue a second pencil into it to use as a crank. Most times there is sticky goo on the throwaway spool; if not, cut a slit in the cardboard and hook the film thru that. After a couple turns, it will stay on.

Then you can blow up the pictures in Windows Picture & Fax Viewer to figure out what you’ve got.

I wish I had a projector (and knew how to properly handle 8mm film) to check it out for sure; maybe the public library would be able to help out.
