Some European Zone countries are still buying-back their pre-Euro coins and currency. Germany is one of them. I have about $200 worth the DMs, and would like to sell them. The Geldwechsels don’t do it, and there’s not a stateside Deutschebank to take them to, and mailing them to Germany seems sort of excessive. I don’t have to get current exchange on them, but my newest grandson could use the jolt to his library fund if there’s a way for me to easily liquidate them…
I spent a lot of time traveling and shopping in Germany a few years ago, brought back too much Waechtersbach holiday stoneware and didn’t remember to change all my German, Austrian, and Hungarian money….
TIA any information.

Hm, Deutsche Mark is not traded anymore.
The German Mark (DEM) is obsolete. It was replaced with the Euro (EUR) on January 1, 1999.
One EUR is equivalent to 1.95583 DEM.
And one Dollar is equivalent to approx Euro 1.38
Would be a nice help for your grandson but I doubt that you will get it exchanged here – if even at all.
I can ask at home – and then send it … $100.00 might be coming out of it.

I asked in Germany now whether DEM still is exchanged into Euro and then of course Dollar.

Thanks for checking on this. I think I can send to the Bundesbank, but that seems such over-kill. I thought maybe in DC or NYC I could find some less dramatic way of redeeming the coins and bills… I have tiny quantities of francs, kroner, schillings, English New Pence, some Slovakian coins, Helvetica….No Pesos, and nothing in big denominations….

Coins will not be converted.
I asked my son in Germany, he [URL removed] send it to me, I’ll send it to Bundes Zentral Bank, they will happily convert it.
We then can mail it back to you.
No ovekille, it just takes some time.
Check me out – I’m also EuropeanGoodies and BlueBoy –
you can trust me.

I will gladly change your DM’s to euro’s! All you would need is to fly me to Germany and I’ll do it for you in person. Then, I could wire you your money from Europe! Yeah, no problem…I’m disabled so I really don’t have a regular schedule…Just make sure the tix are for a 2 week time period—I have friends in the Netherlands, Germany and Italy—it would be fantastic to see them all again!
