Help me date a velvet covered book please? I have 2 books by W.H. Hudson both have covers that feel like velvet, softcover, with raised gold lettering for the title of the book.
One is titled Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar and the other is Shakespeares The Merchant of Venice.
Can anybody tell me when these were published? George G. Harrap & Co. of London are the publishers.
I have looked at W.H’s biography and it does not list these two books in his list of books.

The earliest reference that I have found is from May 1908 in the British
Journal of Education .

Did you have any luck? I think perhaps they were published in 1954. Harrap put out a softcover series then that included both titles. I don’t find any WH Hudson involved. Rev. Henry Norman Hudson was well-known for involvement with Shakespeare’s works. Amazon is always good, but you can also try Abebooks, Alibris, Biblio.com, AddAll, Bookfinders, Chambal and the Antiquarian Booksellers’ Assn. Please let me know if I can help further.

Abe Books at one time they were a little more accurate on book information then Amazon but since Amazon owns them now?

i have done several searches via google, i have not been able to find a picture of the books that i have to match them up to any results. I am guessing they are most likely early 1900s or late 1800s because of the feel of the paper in the books.
thanks for all of your help, i will check some of the other mentioned sites to see if i can find any more info.

I a search for W.H. Hudson, I found some of his books (one first edition) had copyrights about 1922-23. Not sure why his name would be on Shakespeare’s books.
