Would like guidance on preserving abandoned empty Bird’s nest. I have several nests in different sizes and the birds used different materials. Some fall apart when handled. Is there some type of clear spray to keep the materials in place? Thanks.

my grandpa would sprinkle the nest with that delousing stuff and let it sit in the sun all day then would spray it with aqua-net hair spray. he had several small nests on display in his house, hummingbird, finch, wren ect. i dont know how his method would work with bigger nests tho!

I have used a clear lacquer type of spray on the ones I have found and it seems to hold up well.

You can also get a spray acrylic finish that dries clear and would work . You can get a spray adhesive such as 3M’s Super 77 that would work to some extent, but it doesn’t dry completely clear and it would make the nest impossible to handle. Spray glue will remain sticky after it is dry. In fact normal application of spray glue it to spray it on to one or both surfaces that you are trying to glue together and then let them dry a little before you bond them. So if you went the glue route, you would definitely want to use something like a spray lacquer or acrylic over them before you touched them.

First off, you need to make sure to clean the nest. Birdies while cute and fun to watch, can carry little bugs that aren’t fun to bring indoors with the nest.
Use a delouse powder or some other type of bug killer on the nest. Or if nothing else, if you think it will stand up to it, dip it into a pail of good old bleach water and let it dry for a while.
And if you use the de-louse powder or any other kind of bug killer on it, you’ll want to let it sit somewhere outside to “air” out for a day or so.
then use a clear lacquer to coat it a few times and that should do the trick for you

Thanks…That might just work for the small ones. I was wondering if they make a spray glue as some of the nests are made loose with large materials. Almost impossible to remove from the tree.
