I have numerous exotic birds whose cages are in the living room right off the kitchen. Any non stick pan can make them sick or kill them if the pans are over heated. That being said, the pans would really have to sit there burning for a while to put out enough toxins to kill them, unless they are cooped up with little ventilation.

As someone mentioned, scented candles are very bad unless they are put in an area away from the birds so the scent pretty much disperses before reaching the birds.

Don’t use air fresheners either.
Don’t wear perfume around the birds
Certainly don’t smoke around the birds
Got a fireplace? Don’t allow the smoke to back up in the room. My mother in law lost a budgie because she left the room for a while and came back to find the smoke had back up from the fireplace and killed her baby.

No paint fumes should reach the birds

Hope this helps. Give your baby a kiss for me!

Over-heating teflon (over about 500 F) hasn’t been recommended for years. It releases stuff that is not good for any living creatures.

The good news is that there is enough fresh air in most houses so it shouldn’t cause a problem, unless your house is so weather proofed and insulated that it is virtually hermetically sealed. :)

I had a very sweet talking budgie many years ago when I lived in the dorms. He “talked” a lot of people who were afraid of birds into liking birds. He also enjoyed standing on the edge of a wine glass and dipping his beak. Unfortunately, there were no 12 step programs for budgies at the time.

I have indeed heard the same thing. I have two parrots, that’s why it caught my attention when I heard it on TV. They release toxins into the air when they get overheated.

Scented candles can also effect birds.

Hi Montrose,
Hope all is well with you.

I have had birds that lived a very long time and I did cook with Teflon pans. My birds lived to be 14 years old.

I like mine done in a little olive oil, garlic and a hint of rosemary, thanks.

Cast iron pan, of course.

The problem arises from heating the pan without putting anything in it. You can cook with the pan.

Oh, my, title startled me LOL. I have also heard some of the teflon pans emit an odor dangerous to birds :-( I lost a parakeet years ago by having a scented candle burning, per the_seller_inc response. Maybe teflon pans these days are different, but have always heard fumes from those pans would kill a bird :-(

According to the title, I like mine browned and simmered in burgundy!

From my understanding, Teflon is not good to cook in period. I could be wrong, but I’m pretty sure I read that somewhere awhile back. What’s not bad for you!

Love to have found this topic today
will have to call my mom since I heard one of her parakeets is sick
she already went to vet for a shot but did not seem to help
Once I reach her I will give you an update

Last thanksgiving a friend of mine lost two birds . Later she found out it was probably caused by some new oven liner (something to catch spills) they used for the first time on T-Day. It was some Teflon coated thing so the spills would wipe up easily.

[URL removed] It may affect in even small amounts close to the bird. Because a bird does not immediately die, does not mean it has not suffered respiratory problems. Also, bleach, bug spray, aerosol fragrance sprays. When in doubt move to a closed off room from irritants. Larger bird owners beware of salted sunflower seeds, crackers, popcorn, etc. Salt is toxic and will kill the bird!! Birdseed w/ sunflower seeds is unsalted. The old adage “Polly wants a cracker” should have unsalted please.
