This measures about 1 inch in diameter, anyone know what it is? what is the name for the type of clasp?
There is a mark on the back, the letter L appears on the clasp.
On the front there is a circular design of hearts around the ‘mother of pearl’ stone.

Is there a sharp point on the far end of the clasp? Sometimes an L means for the left side, by the way.
[URL removed] No sharp point, then it most likely is not a pin or brooch. How far away from the back of the brooch does the “clasp” for lack of knowing exactly what this thing is, how far away from the back does it stand out? Can’t tell from the angle on your pic.
EDIT 2: Forgot to say that with no teeth, it is most likely not a barrette, they nearly have some sort of teeth. I makes me think of a closure for a coat for some reason…
EDIT 3: I agree with you, probably not a scarf clip, not with that distance between the back and the cross bar. Am pondering on it though…
EDIT 4: Found this at Ruby [URL removed] [URL removed] It looks like your closure.

No sharp point at the far end of the clasp.
The space between the backside of the ‘brooch’ and the farside of the clasp is 3/8", ie the opening in the clasp space is just under 1/2 inch.
I thought maybe this was a scarf clip but this doesnt have the ‘clip’ to do that with.
The ‘arm’ of the clasp comes out from the ‘t’ area but does not extend back, the arm is not hinged like some clasps are.
Sorry for the poor description, I just don’t know what to call this thing or its parts.

Pearl Enhancer seems right, after looking at the link JohnGermaine provided. I inherited one from a great aunt but the back was a little different. Lovely piece though.

Do you remember the long scarves that you would slip around your neck and put clasp on to hold together? That’s what it reminds me of.

To me it looks like a cuff link or a button / button cover but I would say most likely a left cuff link.

What you have there is a scarf clip – used to secure your scarf after your bring both ends through the clip. A vintage form of adorning a silk scarf. :D
You can criss cross your scarf or bring it together in a bolo style, bring both ends through the opening, then cross the ends under the straight pin, thus securing the scarf slip in place as to not slide off. A very useful design – can be worn many different ways.
