Item description
George Washington Playing the Flute for Nellie Custis, painted by Mabel Alvarez. The original is in the Smithsomian by an unknown artist, and she copied it by her own hand. Composition and signature are consistent with her other works. Please reference the similarities from some of her other works shown in photos provided with this listing. The piece for sale here is a fresh discovery from a Florida estate. Condition reflects age - darkened varnish, warped stretcher frame, craquelure, and some fading and slight damage on the left side of the painting. The original wooden stretcher and tacking appear to be in place. Circa 1910s-20s. This painting measures approximately 23" x 39". Beautiful!
When compared to this work, Mabel's paintings "Mood (Arabella)" and "Jerry in Costume" display acute similarities in her preferences for portrait and still life tones and settings.
