Vintage 40s ELZAC Victim of Fashion Glazed and 15 similar items

This exotic woman has hand painted rich, burgundy lips, black eyebrows, and eyeliner. Her earrings are sequins with a bead center; the beaded headband is of wooden beads and the wooden platter has wood and seed “fruit” with an ivory flower; mounted on a faded beige-ish leather head wrap (for lack of better words to describe it.) She sports a bright pink plastic ring around her throat – all are typical components for ELZAC Victims of Fashion pins. It is in pretty exceptional condition considering the usual wear seen on these pieces after 80 years! This exotic beauty measures 3” x 1 ”; is equipped with a safety pin clasp; it is in excellent vintage condition. From the collection of a long-time vintage costume jewelry enthusiast. Always whimsical, ELZAC, which was a much needed “lift” for women during WWII when worry loss, and responsibility weighed heavily on the spirit on the home front. Elzac pins were made in the 1940s in California and decorated by a cottage industry with ceramic, fabric, wood beads, leather snippets, since metals, rubber and other materials that could be used for the war effort were unavailable for frivolous costume and fashion jewelry. Elzac pieces were never signed – a few were marked with paper tags or stickers which most women removed before wearing. The Elzac style is very distinctive and listed in many jewelry collectible books. There is a section on pages 46-49 of, “Warman’s Costume Jewelry Figurals” by Kathy Flood, 2007.
