A beautifully detailed antique sterling silver souvenir spoon by Newburyport Silver Co. (NS Co.), featuring a dramatic figural handle depicting a Native American warrior on the front and a mother carrying a papoose on the reverse. The reverse also incorporates the traditional whirling log symbol, a sacred Native American motif widely used in the American Southwest prior to World War II. The bowl is hand engraved ?Gallup, N.M.,? identifying it as a souvenir from Gallup, New Mexico, one of the historic railroad and trading centers of the American Southwest. The spoon measures approximately 5.75 inches in length and weighs 26 grams. It is marked ?STERLING? and ?NS Co.? for Newburyport Silver Co., a manufacturer in business from 1902 to 1915, placing this piece firmly within that period. The spoon has been carefully hand polished to reveal its crisp sculptural detail while retaining light signs of age and use appropriate for an antique over a century old. The engraved bowl remains clear and attractive. An exceptional example of early twentieth-century Southwestern souvenir silver, combining fine figural casting, historic Gallup provenance, and period Native American imagery.
