Item description
Grow Your Own Glow-in-the-Dark Mushrooms
Grow real bioluminescent mushrooms using your own hardwood log. This DIY kit includes 10 actively colonized glow plug spawn of mycena chlorophos, ready for log inoculation (log not included).
Spring and early fall are ideal seasons to inoculate logs, as moderate temperatures support healthy colonization.
What You Receive
10 colonized glow plug spawn
Step-by-step log inoculation instructions
Educational booklet about bioluminescence
No laboratory equipment required just a suitable hardwood log and basic tools.
How It Works
Drill holes into a hardwood log, insert the plugs, seal, and allow the fungus to colonize the wood. As the mycelium spreads, it produces a natural glow visible in dark conditions. Brightness increases over time as colonization expands and during fruiting.
Colonization and fruiting typically occur within 15 months depending on conditions.
Log Sourcing
Suitable hardwood logs (oak, maple, beech and similar species) can often be sourced from:
Backyard tree trimmings
Fallen branches
Firewood suppliers
Local arborists
Recommended log size: 612 inches long and 24 inches in diameter.
Smaller logs may also be used.
A Living Science Project
Ideal for terrariums, vivarium's, backyard nature projects, classrooms, and anyone fascinated by the natural phenomenon known as foxfire or faerie fire.
This is a living biological process growth and glow intensity depend on environment and care.
