Item description
An exceptional antique Chinese ceremonial wedding apron (waist panel) dating to the late Qing Dynasty?early Republic period, circa 1880?1910. This rare textile was traditionally worn over the skirt as part of a bridal ensemble and is richly embroidered on vibrant red silk with auspicious symbols celebrating marriage, fertility, prosperity, and harmony. ( Image for the purpose of style, not an image of the actual product)
The apron features finely worked butterflies, bees and moth-bees, peacock feather motifs, and abundant florals, including stylized chrysanthemums and peonies. The embroidery employs multiple advanced hand techniques, most notably Forbidden stitch (Gu Xiu / Peking knot) within the flower centers?an elite, extremely labor-intensive method historically associated with imperial and upper-class domestic workshops.
The stiffened upper panel, side ties, widening lower hem, and fully finished edges confirm this was made as a standalone ceremonial apron, not a robe fragment. It is backed with a period-appropriate printed cotton lining, consistent with late Qing wedding textiles intended for actual wear.
A rare survival of intact Chinese bridal attire, this piece is suitable for museum collections, serious textile collectors, or scholarly display.
