Item description
Fascinating find at a recent estate sale from a member of the board of the XPrize which awarded $10M prize to the first company/consortium to take private individuals to space (62 miles up) and return safely. This prize was awarded to SpaceShipOne in 2004. To commemorate the occasion, artist Erik Lindbergh - the grandson of famous aviator Charles Lindbergh and an artist who captures the art of space and flight, created this ?Retro Rocket?. Six of them were flown aboard SpaceShipOne?s initial voyage. Of the 6, one was auctioned off fetching over $15,000 for a charity. The other 5 were sold privately and have never come up for sale. Those 6 were 4.5 inches tall.
The Retro Rocket we have listed here is an inch taller at 5.5 inches so we presume it was sold by the artist and is not one of the original six to fly to the edge of space.
This Retro Rocket was designed by the artist with old reminders of space shows from his youth.
We have reached out to the artist for clarification but have not heard back as yet. Where it gets interesting is that the previous owner likely knew the artist and seemed to be in similar circles. Both were members of XPrize Board as we understand and both lived in the same town (St Louis).
And then you have the connection of the artist as grandson to Charles Lindbergh. His art sells online under his name and similar ?Retro Rockets? seem to be available for commission around $2,000+. For more information on the artist, you can check out his web site at www.eriklindbergh.com
The ?Retro Rocket? is made from polished bronze with a very cool reddish gold finish. It?s marked EL 2004 underneath.
Any sci-fi fan or space enthusiast would love this as a highlighted display of a collection.
Will ship USPS with tracking to winning buyer. Will include a Signed Delivery Receipt for added protection in shipping.
