Item description
The iron hammer, of a type known as a fore-hammer, was found at the Roman fort at Newstead in Roxburghshire. It was used by a blacksmith between 80 and 100AD.
The hammer is broadly lozengiform in plan, rectangular in profile and square in section at the striking face, Set at the right angle to the haft. The eye is circular, set in a diamond-shaped expansion
The Roman army needed blacksmiths to make iron tires, fittings, and nails, as well as to repair weapons. The fore hammer would have been the blacksmith's basic hammer. it was suited to making spears and sword blades.
I decided to make custom listings for tools that I haven't tried making yet but I would love to.
These listing are more or less support, so I can make tools that are not so common and are really unique.
I will discuss materials, finishes, dimensions with you, a customer, but the main idea is:
Forged hammer from modern mono-steel like 42CrMo4. Heat-treated with a forged finish and a polished working face.
Can be made with a wrought iron body with forge-welded carbon steel for the face. All cleaned up and then etched to bring out the patterns. (It can be fire etched or normal etched)
The price for such material will be much higher (expect twice as much) as much more labor and expensive materials go into making.
It will be hafted on the ash handle.
Dimensions will be scaled according to the weight, can be made as a total replica in size to if you want.
It is custom work so 1-3 months waiting to complete should be expected
