Stunning antique mid-19th century red wool cape, dating to the 1860s?1870s Civil War era. Hand embroidered in bold turquoise and orange threadwork, which stands out beautifully against the rich red wool. The cape is cut with a classic mid-Victorian silhouette ? narrow shoulders, sweeping hem, and short length designed to layer over dresses of the era. Fully lined in satin; the lining appears to have been replaced in the early 20th century with satin, but remains intact and wearable. Condition Very good antique condition. Only a couple of tiny moth holes noted. Strong color, embroidery vibrant, and structure sound. Provenance Note Hand-embroidered capes of this type were common in the Civil War through Reconstruction era, often worn for warmth as well as ornament.
