Black Madonna Carved Macassar Ebony 12.5" and 34 similar items

This Madonna in prayer sculpture is hand carved out of macassar ebony, a dark heartwood with contrasting bands of yellow and golden brown. This is possibly a Makonde carving out of Tanzania, but we can't be sure. If so it likely dates to the 1930s. This figure stands approximately 12 1/2 inches tall and has a beautiful stippling pattern across the chest. Her lovely face is relaxed in prayer. She's in wonderful condition for the age. There are a few micro-scratches on the upper back and the back of the figure is lighter than the front, most likely due to sitting a window for many years. Just overall lovely patina and age to this piece.
