I?ve read and enjoyed all the books in this (excellent) series, but this one may be my favorite. Bell grudgingly agrees to look into the death of a former classmate?s father, though she sees it as something of a fool?s errand. After all, Harmon Strayer was an old man suffering from Alzheimer?s ? his death was hardly unexpected. But it?s not as simple as that, and circumstances seem to be conspiring against Bell. Bitter cold weather, a punishing storm, a suspicious accident and Bell?s troubled daughter all complicate Bell?s life and her investigation. Julia Keller writes beautifully, and this is a ?perfect storm? of a novel. Rich and nuanced characterization, a multi-layered storyline and a compelling mystery all come together to make this a tense and ultimately satisfying read. I loved the backstory involving a young Harmon Strayer and I enjoyed the interplay between Bell and her assistant, Rhonda Lovejoy. As always, Keller?s vividly descriptive writing evokes a strong sense of place and draws the reader right into the story. While this does work as a standalone novel, I?d highly recommend reading this series in order. These characters have long-standing and complex relationships that have evolved over the course of these five books, and I think knowing their history enhances the reading experience. Occasional strong language and adult situations. No explicit sexual content.
