Notes: Price-clipped Jacket has minor shelf wear, binding tight, pages clean and unmarked. Pp. xliv, 854, 26 illustrations (photos, line drawings and facsimiles), 4 maps (2 are folding). Publisher's original wine red and brown cloth, lettered in gilt on the spine and front cover, lettered pictorial dust jacket, lg 8vo. This is the first volume of a three volume set. Fremont explored the lands between the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers including mapping portions of the Des Moines River from 1838 to 1842. Fremont then led expeditions on the Oregon Trail into the Sierra Nevada. He is most famous for his later explorations of California.
