Notes: Jacket has minor wear, binding sound, front endpage has a gift inscription. The Book in India is the fascinating story of the 2,000 years it took for the book to evolve. It catalogues the development of various materials, scripts and illustrations that went into making it. Indian culture, with its gurushishya tradition, always regarded oral rendition far superior to the written. If it was not for Buddhist and Jain priests who feared that their divine utterances would be lost if not suitably chronicled, the book in India might have appeared later than it did. It was believed until recently that writing was first introduced by the Aryans between 1,000 to 1,500 B.C. but, the latest excavations at Mohenjo-daro, Harappa and Lothal reveal that a system of writing was prevalent at least 1,500 years earlier. Commenting on the 1st edition of The Book in India, the newspaper Times of India in its August, 1989 issue has called the book, "A book of the record, for the record" and "doubtlessly a masterpiece...a keepsake every book lover would be proud to possess. From Wikipedia: "B. S. KesavanBellary Shamanna Kesavan(10 May 1909 - 16 February 2000) was the first National Librarian of independent India(1947?1962).[1][2] He is also known as Father of Indian National Bibliography as it was first brought out in his leadership on 15 August 1958. Later, he became the first Director of the Indian National Scientific Documentation Centre (INSDOC) at New Delhi(1963?1969).[3] In recognition of his great service to the nation, the Government of India honoured him with Padma Shri."
