Item description
Ludisia is a genus of terrestrial orchids, commonly known as Jewel Orchids, known for their striking, ornamental foliage. The most well-known species is Ludisia discolor, which features dark, velvety leaves with contrasting veins and can produce small white flowers. These orchids are relatively easy to care for and can be grown in standard potting mixes, making them popular houseplants. Ludisia discolor is non-toxic to dogs and cats, according to the ASPCA
Care
Flowers:
They produce small, white, and sometimes yellow-centered flowers in the winter.
Growth Habit:
Ludisia discolor has a creeping stem that can trail over the edge of a pot, allowing it to spread out and cover a larger area. They tend to grow sideways as ground orchids rather than getting taller.
Light:
They prefer bright, indirect light, avoiding direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves. East or north-facing windows are ideal.
Watering:
Allow the top inch of soil to dry out between waterings, but avoid letting the plant dry out completely.
Humidity:
Jewel orchids thrive in high humidity, making them suitable for terrariums. Use a humidifier or place the plant on a tray of pebbles and water.
Potting Mix:
They prefer a well-draining potting mix, such as a mix of peat moss, perlite, and potting soil.
Care Tips:
Avoid overwatering: Ensure good drainage to prevent root rot.
Fertilize regularly:
Use a diluted orchid fertilizer every two weeks during the growing season.
Repot as needed:
Repot every 1-2 years to prevent the plant from becoming pot-bound.
