In maritime communication, the nautical pennant numeral four (4) represents the digit "4". It's part of the International Code of Signals and is used to convey numeric information when combined with other flags. The specific meaning of a four flag, like any signal flag, depends on the context and how it's combined with other flags according to Flagpro.
Here's a breakdown of how numeral flags are used:
One-flag signals: Often used for urgent or common signals and warnings.
Two-flag signals: Typically used for distress or maneuvering signals.
Three-flag signals: Used for compass points, relative bearings, standard times, verbs, punctuation, and general code/decode signals.
Four-flag signals: Employed for geographical signals, names of ships, and bearings.
Five-flag signals: Used to indicate time and position.
Six-flag signals: Indicate north, south, east, or west in latitude and longitude signals.
Seven-flag signals: Used for longitude signals with more than one hundred degrees.
