About The Record:
Honky Tonk Angel, by Ellen McIlwaine, is Ellen McIlwaine?s debut solo album after leaving the band Fear Itself, showcasing her unique blend of folk, blues, soul, and funk. The album, recorded partly live at The Bitter End and partly in the studio at The Record Plant in New York City, features McIlwaine?s virtuosic acoustic slide guitar and powerful, melismatic vocals across covers like Wade In The Water and originals like Losing You. Historically significant for its genre-defying style and McIlwaine?s pioneering role as a female guitarist-vocalist, it gained a cult following, particularly in Australia, and was later compiled with her 1973 album We the People as Up From the Skies: The Polydor Years in 1993. No singles from the album achieved mainstream chart success, but Toe Hold and Can?t Find My Way Home are often highlighted for their live energy and critical acclaim. The album?s eclectic mix and McIlwaine?s innovative guitar work remain influential, though it did not produce any widely recognized hit singles.
