Item description
Located in Northwestern New Mexico, Fort Wingate is situated near Gallup, a town known for its rugged terrain and storied history for indigenous American populations that have shaped the local culture and helped develop a distinct culture. Though New Mexico would not achieve statehood until 1912, the region experienced a significant boom in population and development following the conclusion of the American Civil War. The completion of rail lines in the area helped bring settlers from the East eager to explore the rich landscape and opportunities for mining valuable minerals for export to major manufacturing hubs across the Midwest and Northeast.
Fort Wingate was an instrumental outpost during these developmental years and would later serve as a storage facility for Composition B explosives that were used in the Trinity Test, which was held on July 16, 1945. This vintage photograph depicts the United States Geological Services establishing a baseline for development and platting. Fort Wingate was closed in 1993, and efforts began to clean up pollution in the area. Gallup was founded in 1881 and became a hub for the Atlantic and Pacific Railroad, which opened access for immigrants heading to the West Coast for economic opportunities in mining for oil, gold, and silver as well as work in the bustling ports from Los Angeles to San Francisco and Seattle.
This photo bears a distinctive aesthetic and unique perspective that immediately transports the viewer back in time, creating a bond between the past and present with a single glance.
