Item description
Perhaps one of the most defining moments of the twentieth century for any nation, the Apollo 11 space flight was the first voyage that landed American Astronauts on the moon's surface and remains one of the most significant moments in space travel and a turning point in international politics. Three of the most iconic astronauts comprised the Apollo 11 crew, Commander Neil Armstrong, Lunar Module Pilot Buzz Aldrin, and Pilot Michael Collins, and remain some of the era's most influential figures. The first steps on the moon were broadcast on live TV and bears one of the most famous quotes of the twentieth century when Armstrong described the lunar walk as "one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind."
Pictured here in the days leading up to the flight, this photograph illustrates the reverence the nation held for these three men who would change the course of history during a time of significant transformation in the United States as the nation fought the Vietnam War and students across the country protested, while a new counter-culture developed and eschewed the beliefs of the more conservative previous generations.
This photo represents the accomplishments of numerous scientific and technological advances and is the culmination of years of work by some top minds in multiple fields. Its classic style immediately transports the viewer back in time, creating a link between the past and present that offers a glimpse into our collective past.
