Item description
This iconic photo illustrates America in a time of considerable transition and transformation as the turn of the twentieth century loomed. Taken during the so-called Gilded Age, cities like Philadelphia were experiencing significant change as huge fortunes were being made and workers flocked to the North looking for work in the numerous manufacturing facilities that had become common in the years following the conclusion of the American Civil War. This period was marked by technological advances as well as Architectural development, including the development of steel and glass skyscrapers that were starting to transform the skylines of major cities like Philadelphia, New York City, and Chicago.
Barbershops were popular meeting places for men in the nineteenth century and were home to lively political discourse, including local current events and economic developments. This photo perfectly captures a distinct moment in history as America raced towards a more modern society that was becoming a world superpower and towns and cities across America grew. Immigrants had flocked to America during the nineteenth century and established numerous distinct neighborhoods and communities along cultural lines, many of which exist to this day. Photographs like this provide a link to American history and how our cultures have evolved and developed.
Philadelphia remains one of America's most historically significant cities and the second largest city in the Northeast after New York City. From the earliest days of settlement to a brief period as the nation's Capital, the city remains an iconic and enduring part of American history.
