The Polish Lancers of the Imperial Guard (1st Regiment)
Origins: Formed in 1807 after Napoleon was impressed by Polish cavalry during the 1806–1807 campaigns in Poland. Many recruits were exiled Polish nobles seeking to liberate their partitioned homeland.
Famous Service:
Fought in the Peninsular War (Spain) and the Russian Campaign (1812).
Heroic charge at Somosierra Pass (1808), where 150 lancers stormed Spanish artillery positions.
Uniform: Blue jackets with crimson facings, czapka (traditional Polish helmet), and white-and-crimson pennants on their lances.
Legacy: Symbolized Polish loyalty to Napoleon and became icons of Romantic-era military valor.
