Item description
### **Cercis canadensis (Eastern Redbud)**
#### **Description**
Cercis canadensis, commonly known as the Eastern Redbud, is a deciduous tree native to eastern North America. It is known for its striking clusters of pink to magenta flowers that bloom directly on its branches (cauliflory) in early spring, before the leaves emerge. The heart-shaped leaves are green in summer and turn yellow in fall. Mature trees can grow 20?30 feet tall and wide, with an attractive, spreading crown.
#### **Latin Name**
*Cercis canadensis*
#### **Interesting Fact**
The flowers of the Eastern Redbud are edible and can be used as garnishes or added to salads for a sweet, tangy flavor. Historically, Native Americans and early settlers utilized parts of the tree for medicinal and culinary purposes.
---
### **How to Grow**
#### **Growing Conditions**
- **Light:** Prefers full sun to partial shade.
- **Soil:** Thrives in well-drained, fertile soils but tolerates clay and sandy soils.
- **Water:** Requires moderate watering, especially during establishment. Once established, it is drought-tolerant.
- **Climate:** Hardy in USDA zones 4?9.
#### **Planting Instructions**
1. **Site Selection:** Choose a location with good air circulation and protection from strong winds.
2. **Planting Time:** Plant in early spring or fall.
3. **Spacing:** Space trees 20?30 feet apart.
4. **Care:** Mulch around the base to retain soil moisture and suppress weeds. Prune after flowering to maintain shape and remove dead or crossing branches.
---
### **How to Grow from Seed**
1. **Seed Collection:** Harvest seeds from pods in fall once they turn brown.
2. **Seed Preparation:** Redbud seeds have a hard coat and require scarification and stratification:
- **Scarification:** Soak seeds in boiling water for 1?2 minutes, then allow them to cool. ### **Cercis canadensis (Eastern Redbud)**

3. **Sowing:** A
- Sow seeds in pots or a prepared garden bed in spring after stratification.
- Cover lightly with soil, approximately 1/4 inch deep.
- Keep the soil moist but not waterlogged.
4. **Germination:** Seeds typically germinate within 2?4 weeks when conditions are optimal.
5. **Transplanting:** Transplant seedlings when they are a few inches tall and have several sets of leaves.
By following these steps, you can enjoy the beauty of Cercis canadensis in your garden or landscape!

SEEDING HINTS
Redbud seeds have hard, impermeable seedcoats and dormant embryos. The seedcoats must be broken and dormancy overcome before the redbud seeds can germinate.
Boil seed in boiling water for one minute and then soak in hot water overnight. This is done to allow moisture to penetrate the seed coat. (You will see a photo of the difference when soaked- the seed is not longer impermeable and has allowed water to swell the seeed)
Dormancy can be overcome by subjecting the seeds to moisture and cool temperatures for a specific period of time. Place a small amount of a moist potting soil in the bottom of a small plastic container, such as a margarine tub. Place the redbud seeds on the surface and then cover with additional moist potting soil. Make 1 or 2 small holes in the plastic lid and then place it on the container. Place the container in the refrigerator for 5 to 8 weeks. (The temperature should be 35 to 41 degrees Fahrenheit.) After the cool, moist requirement has been met, remove the seeds from the refrigerator and plant indoors. Using a commercial potting mix, plant the redbud seeds 1/4 to 1/2 deep. Keep the potting mix moist until the redbud seeds germinate.
