Michael Luther Heivly was born on May 27, 1944, in Williamsport, Pa., to Luther E. and Isabelle Dougherty Heivly. He died on February 28, 2021, in Charlottesville, Va., of complications from Parkinson's Disease.
His Dad was a career Air Force man so Michael grew up in a number of states as well as Japan. Michael graduated from Lycoming College in Williamsport in 1966 with degrees in Biology and Sociology. He taught for 3 years in Pa., and Md., where he attended the Maryland Institute of Art in Baltimore. He earned his Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of Colorado ? Boulder in 1972, then worked for one year at Ohio University in Athens before moving to the California State University system where he taught for 37 years at San Diego State and California State ? Bakersfield. Michael taught at Santa Reparata Printmaking Studio in Florence, Italy during the summers of 1974 and 1975. He was a visiting artist at the Irish National College of Art in Dublin and his art was exhibited worldwide. Retiring in 2010, he and his wife, Audrey, moved to Charlottesville, Va., to be near family. Michael continued his art career with shows in Charlottesville and at Duke University Chapel in Durham, N.C. He was a member of Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church and maintained a studio in the church where he was known as the "Artist in Residence".
Michael was an avid fly fisherman and loved being on western rivers in the wooden drift boat he and his son Jesse built. A gifted and supportive teacher, he was an accomplished author and poet and was always brimming with creative ideas. One of his last projects was a series of photographs and soil medium as part of the Blue Ridge Tunnel project through Clann Mhor. He loved Ireland and celebrated his Irish heritage.
Michael is survived by his wife of 53 years, Audrey Marshall Heivly; son, Joshua and wife, Joni Baker; two grandsons, Henry and Arthur Heivly, as well as cousins, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his son, Jesse Micah Heivly; his parents and his paternal grandparents, Luther M. and Hannah O'Brien Heivly.
