Item description
THE GRAPES OF WRATH
by John Steinbeck.
New York: The Viking Press, (1962).
First Compass Books edition, FIFTEENTH printing.
"Fifteenth printing December 1962" and "Compass Books edition issued 1958 by The Viking Press, Inc." statements to the copyright page.
The first edition, first printing published in 1939 bore the same format and binding art, with the only difference being colors in the jacket illustration, in this evocative vintage reprint.
The Nobel Prize winning author's Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award winning novel of the Dust Bowl in the Great Depression was adapted to the 1940 John Ford directed film starring Henry Fonda.
Former owner's 1963 dated vintage bookplate to the inside front cover, else fairly tight, firm and very nearly fine in cream-tweed linen with deep-brown embossed Elmer Hader line illustration wrapped around from the front to the rear covers, deep-brown embossed titles to the spine, russet-brown upper page edges; in a very good dust jacket with wraparound auburn, green and earth-toned hued illustration by Hader, green and amber titles to the front panel and to the spine, some short shelf-edge tears, spine panel fading to green, a small chip to the upper edge of the rear panel, minor crimps and a nick to the lower end of the front panel, and small nicks and rubs to the upper and lower spine edges; no printed price to the front inner flap.
(NO book club signifying impression dot to the lower rear cover).
An uncommon hardcover issue.
Octavo; 619 pages.
