Item description
This is a vintage E.R. Durkee Co, New York, salad dressing bottle that most likely dates between 1908 and 1929. The antique condiment glass jar is embossed around the neck, "E. R. Durkee New York". The bottom of the vintage New York bottle is embossed "Bottle Patented April 17, 1877" along with a figure containing several marks, 16 - R6 - L in the center with a roman numeral III over a 31 and the letter R below (some of the markings are difficult to read and this is a best guess). From what I've read, the style of bottle was most likely used for Durkee's Salad Dressing. Its machine made, putting a startdate to around 1908 to to 1929 when the company was sold to Glidden. Eugene R. Durkee of Buffalo, NY began selling spices and extracts around 1850 and the salad dressing around 1857. As the company grew, it moved to Brooklyn, Long Island, then New York City until its purchase in 1929. The company sold a vast variety of products ranging from Hair Dye to sauces. My father, an avid bottle digger, found this beautiful bottle in the ruins of an old homestead in Virginia more than 40 years ago. Its in great shape, free from breaks or cracks. Clarity is very nice for a dug bottle, with light calcification. (See photos.) It measures about 6.75" x 2.5".
