This is for an original vintage artwork by the great Harry Schaare, signed lower right. This shows a war time airman looking up in shock at something he just spotted. An ambush?
This is done on black paper using primarily colored pencil. If you look closely on the back you can see the outline of the initial drawing. The matting appears original to the piece. A piece of the mat has separated at the side but it fits in place like a puzzle piece. Schaare illustrated several books and magazines. The mat was likely meant to be the entire presentation submitted to a publisher. Today this needs to be framed under glass. A new mat would be perfectly fine. It's about the artwork.
What a great image considering Schaare flew for the Army in World War II.
