Item description
Here we are selling a beautiful flow blue, rolled edge; souvenir plate entitled "Souvenir of New York City". The front shows the Statue of Liberty, Natural History Museum, Metropolitan Museum , 'The Obelisk', St. Paul 's Chapel, Battery Park, Brooklyn Bridge , Post Office, Hall of Records, Park Row circa 1893 -1938. The Staffordshire potters showed their greatest genius in the choice of the rich dark blue color. It was a lovely tone, and once it made an overwhelming appeal to housewives. How many different designs were made will never be known, as, even in these days an un-cataloged piece will not infrequently turn up from some attic chest or some ancient chimney corner. It is scenes such as the ones on this plate that make that century-old Staffordshire ware so popular nowadays with collectors. Historical societies likewise seek appropriate pieces for their museums. Such commemorative dishes certainly help to keep alive the past glowing memories. They are more than plates: they have become a library of History. Rowland Marsellus were importers, wholesalers and retailers, especially of 'souvenir' wares operating out of New York, circa 1893 -1938. This plate is in near perfect condition with no chips or scratches. Bright blue clear white, no stains, some age related crazing.
Backstamp: R M in diamond, The Rowland Marsellus co. Staffordshire England in cartouche
