I recently set up the option for international orders to Canada, Mexico, the UK & Ireland, and Australia. Currently I’m “theory-crafting” issues I may run across so I can get them resolved before they arise mid-purchase.
When putting flat rate shipping on my pieces, it charges shipping based on the number of items in the order, not the order itself. [URL removed] Someone buys 2 items to a US address; they are shuffled into my standard US shipping cost, which is $4; it charges them $8 shipping for the 2 items, even though it still only costs me $4 to ship.
This isn’t much of an issue with US customers, because the difference between $4 and $8 isn’t very much. However, in my testing, I realize it’s doing the exact same thing for international orders. Someone purchases 2 items to, say, Great Britain; Flat Rate shipping would be $40 USD, but upon calculating shipping it tells them it’s going to charge $80 USD. However, it will only cost me $40 USD to ship it.
International shipping costs are already expensive. How do I avoid this automatic over-charging to my International customers?? I already feel horrible that I have to charge so much for just one item, it feels unfair to charge them double shipping costs when it will NOT cost that much to ship.

Flat Rate [URL removed] Offer a discount for each item after the first when calculating shipping costs for items with flat rate shipping.
Put in either percentage/amount to add/subtract for each additional item.
You may have to do a few practice runs to see if shows they way you want (I do this by logging out) and pretending to be a customer, put a few things in the cart and put in a random location and see what the shipping will be…
