Where is the best place to research vintage cutlery?

What the heck was this spoon used for? 1881 rogers a1 This spoon was in a huge lot of silverplate I got at a charity auction. I could figure out what most of the unusual pieces were for but this one has me baffled. It looks like it was designed to hang from/against something… I know nothing about flatware, I just thought the stuff looked cool and it was for a good cause. Also, everything had been polished… does that detract from its value?

Very funny Momspennies!! I wish I had some bent keys too!

This spoon doesn’t look like it’s been bent or reshaped, it seems is designed with the smooth narrow bend in the middle (with no decoration), but I’ll lay odds that you’re all right and someone heated and bent it… for what purpose is a mystery to me though. Thanks!!!

It looks like an antique baby spoon to me too. I’m wondering if the handle has been bent from it’s original shape. Most antique baby spoons I’ve seen over the years, the handle bent under like some of these.

possible soup spoon designed to sit comfortably inside a bowl, perhaps?

answered over 13 years ago

Could it be for ease of use for the elderly or for arthritic hands.
Depending the size of the spoon bowl, for baby’s to handle easier?

In that second picture, is that some kind
of an extension at the end the handle?

I believe its a babys spoon. Curved handle for easy grasping.
Extension may be to keep it from slipping intp the bowl???

Hope you get the answer your looking for!

Looks like a baby spoon to me too.

Yes, I would tend to think it is a vintage/antique baby spoon. Most of the old baby spoons had curved or “bent” handles. Provided the items have been gently and correctly &/or professionally polished, should not detract from their value.

Here is a link to Replacements.com where I usually can identify any kind of flatware. Here is also an example of a spoon such as yours.

It’s Uri Gellers Spoon!

It’s an old baby training spoon I think. Mom holds the end kind of like a coffee cup handle and baby holds the larger curved area.

Looks like an antique baby spoon. You might have luck if you try replacements LTD. and do a search for baby spoon.

My little sister used one that was similar—only hers had the handle bent clean around to the spoon again. Mama called it a “curl-handled-spoon”, and it was what she used to teach my sister to feed herself. It might have been a gift from one of our elderly neighbors—I don’t remember how we got it. It definitely look antique…but maybe that’s just because my sister used it a lot!

Hey Mom’s Penny—I was going to ask for Uri Geller’s spoon back! [he’s a distant relative of mine]. But, I don’t think it was a baby’s spoon…being it wasn’t made out of silver [the ‘ol saying, ’born with a silver spoon in your mouth’—actually has a meaning]. Silver has anti-bacterial properties…So, kids fed from them tended to get sick less often…just the sort of advantage rich folks have to deal with…[ah, but once the revolution gets going its going to be a different story—holy cow—did I type that out loud?]
nevermind…
Oh, and I think it looks like its been bent—a la Uri G., or muscle power…
