Webs store customization question - categories

Is anyone else having these issue and if so do you know how to fix it?

I have categories and sub categories, example Womens shoes, then Pumps, flats, etc. I want the drill down on my web store to show the overall category on the drop down menu under products, then open up to the sub categories.

When I go to edit my webstore design, it will only allow me to chose the parent category if there is something in it. Currently, I had to move one of my handbags back up to the parent category of handbags to be able to add it to my drop down menu. If I dont leave something in that category, it wont show anything in the category at all on the drop down menu as it considers it an empty category.

Maybe I am missing something in the process? If not, then we certainly need the ability to chose any category to show in the drop down menu regardless of if it has anything in it.

thanks!

After I placed an item in the parent category, I moved it back down to the child category and it did keep it showing on the web site until I updated it again. It then took the parent site back off my drop down menu. Not a good thing.
