I’m not sure quite how to categorize this item. We believe that it’s most likely a cemetary marker. I don’t have a picture yet, but will try to get one soon. It’s a cast metal “shield” approx. 8" tall and not quite as wide, mounted on a bar that’s approx. 2’ tall. The bar is extremely rusted at the base, which makes it very credible that this was in the dirt for a very long time. At the very top of the shield, it says “1883” over the top of a rising sun image. Inside the body of the sun, is “S” and “V” superimposed over each other. Cast into the shield just below the sun image is also “SVA” just above two crossed sabers.
Internet search so far hasn’t provided any useful info. I don’t know that I necessarily want to post this for sale, but would like to learn more about it, if somebody can point me in the right direction.
Thank you!

Hi. I’m thinking you’re absolutely right about it being a cemetery marker, probably placed by a group. I did a little digging and came up with Sons of the Union Veterans of the Civil War. Here’s a brief history on their [URL removed]
The Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War was a creation of the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) which was formed in 1866. Wanting to pass on its heritage, the GAR in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania created a Corps of Cadets in 1878 which later became the Sons of Veterans of the United States of America (SV). This latter organization was formed in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on November 12, 1881. The SV units functioned much as National Guard units and actually served along with state militia during the Spanish American War.
Since they were going by “Sons of Veterans” as of 1881 and were possibly known as “SV” at that time, maybe they are the group who placed the marker.
I found this image on their [URL removed]

Their site is www.suvcw.org. Does the art look similar to the marker?

You may run into trouble trying to sell it. Usually these were taken from cemeteries, not tossed out. I had one years ago and some people told me to take it off of that other site. Good luck whatever you do.
