Flashlights are a must. Get the cranking kind and you won’t have to mess with batteries.
A small digital TV.
A large generator.
An inverter.
Candles
A syphon. During that season when we were hit with a lot of hurricanes, we had gas in our cars, but no way to get the gas out. You need the gas for your generator.
Lanterns
Solar outdoor lights. You can use these indoors instead of flashlights.
Lots of water. Canned foods.
Barbecue and propane. Bring it in during the hurricane. You can use it to cook and bake after the hurricane.
An old-fashion phone that has a cord. They will work for a time after the hurricane.
Small fans for each room. You can run them with your generator.
Blue tarp for leaks on the roof.
Carbon monoxide alarm.
Shutters for your windows are a must.
Scatter rugs for your dogs to pee on.
Make sure you have all your meds.
Get all your neighbors phone numbers before the storm. You will need to be friendly with them after. Trust me, You will need them more than you can imagine.
Call a roofer before the storm hits. Have him come to your house to examine your roof right after the storm. Make the appt. before. If you make it after you will be waiting for months.
Have your gardener on call before the storm hits also. He will not be available later.
Buy clorax. The water in the tub will be used for flushing your toilets. Fill pots with water.
Charge all your tools before the storm hits.
Take lots of photos of you belonging and put them in a zip lock bag. Put your insurance papers in a ziplock bag.
Figure out what room you are going to ride the storm in. Try to find a room with no windows.
Do not go outside during the hurricane. Many people die because they get lampooned with a flying object.
Call your Internet Provider and get the dial up number before the storm so you can continue to use your laptop during the hurricane.

Also, if you have a need for extra gas….getting those 5 gal / 20 litre can filled up is not a bad idea…gas for your generator or for your vehicles.

Really hoping that this season will not be a bad one….is el nino still in effect?

Hurricanes and Tornados can be a real threat to your families safty and well being. Make sure you have pleanty of water and food supplies, that Do NOT require heat or a stove. For free dial up interet service, you can always use Net.Zero. Free, but lots of adds and of course a limit of 10 hours use per month. But it is still free. I use it when my dish goes down in the winters, with all the snow.

Remember the small things that are sometimes forgotten- plenty of matches, including the long, weather proof matches, water purifier tablets, kerosene for lanterns, plenty of extra batteries in all sizes, back up emergency weather radio (in case the one you have goes out), definitely a cord phone, personal items that will make the days ahead a wee bit more [URL removed] book light, favorite books, journal, pens, paper, craft items, snuggie, meds, ipod, walkman, etc… in your own personal place for easy location, during a stressful time, when you may not be able to think straight.
