Around a week and a half ago I was looking for an artbook of a popular anime series that was still in mint condition, which I found here. The page claimed that there was only one of them left to which I decided to buy. The purchase went through however just a couple days ago I was notified that the seller decided to refund my purchase without leaving me a reason why this happened. I decided to message the seller to see what had happened to my order that would cause them to refund it. As I was going through their profile I noticed that the link I had used to purchase the book said that it had been sold. I then noticed that the seller was selling a similar artbook that also claimed that it was the last one left but that the price was way higher. The seller has not responded to my messages and I am wondering if I should report them to the website for price gouging.

Making a case for price gouging probably can’t be made since “gouging” usually refers to items that are both essential and in short supply – things (gasoline, facemasks, hand sanitizer, certain medical supplies, etc.) that become scarce due to emergency situations. Not sure that a book qualifies.
Also, many sellers use multiple selling platforms (eBay, etsy, Amazon, etc.) besides Bonanza. This is not against any rules (many eBay sellers do the same thing). Sellers sometimes adjust their prices due to the differences in commissions they pay to the selling site. However, it is the responsibility of the seller to adjust inventory as needed so that duplicate sales don’t happen. It is entirely possible that the item sold on a different platform around the same time that you purchased it on Bonanza.
Duplicate sales on different platforms within the same time period are rare, but it can happen. Something out of the control of the seller may have impacted their ability to make that inventory adjustment in a timely manner.
And THEN… something like this can happen to a [URL removed]

What tomwayne says is true but there are also those that just park items here and cancel sales while their items are active on another site at a higher price…
I too have had that happen here and other sites also
My son really wanted something and I found it here and on ebay…same picture same seller, etc but of course cheaper here..
I bought it, the next day the item was refunded and the item was relisted with a somewhat higher price….(kind of blatant, I would say)
Emailed and asked if the item was still available, then why the refund…emailed about month later since the item was still listed here and ebay…
Never heard back from them…the booth, and the seller are no longer here
Unfortunately this has happened more than once and I have learned to be more careful with purchasing from larger importers from other sites…I know not all are like that…but it still does make me leery, especially if profile is hidden, does not show if the seller being very active here.
Sorry this happened, but if the seller does not respond, just move on…report the communication failure if you wish, but as said…it is not price gouging.. just bad manners not responding to buyers

If sellers are listing the same items here and on other sites, and the item is one of a kind or otherwise scarce, it’s possible the item has sold somewhere else a day or so before you bought it here.
The notification process can be slow and the seller may not have the opportunity to take down the Bonanza listing until a day or so later.
Sorry that happened to you, but when rare or one of a kind items are involved, that can be a possible outcome. Hope you find what you’re looking for… I just wanted you to know it’s probably nothing the seller had control of and that’s why you haven’t gotten an answer from them.
Selling online still has a lot of kinks and drawbacks for individual sellers that some of the large online companies never have to encounter.

It was unfortunate that this happened to you here. Know that it is not Bonanza’s fault, but the fault of a bad seller that put their items across multiple platforms and did not monitor their product well when something sold. I dont sell on Ebay any more with the forced Managed Payment change but when I did, I Did NOT Cross Pollinate the same item on both sites (at the same time) in case it sold on one site and still hung out there on the other as I dont live on the computer to monitor that situation other than check once or twice per day. I agree with your frustration on what happened and sellers like that SHOULD be reported to the selling site (in my opinion) in case they are doing this too much and be punished for not maintaining their items more strictly perhaps with some sort of penalty fee if it happens too many times.
