All i wanted to do was offer a comment and i got a purchase price

I did not want to buy the item; I simply wanted to make a comment about it.

Instead, the would-be seller somehow got notified that I was asking for a negotiated price.

That’s not really fair to the seller, to raise his/her expectation and cause him/her unnecessary work.

There needs to be a way to simply make a comment – not a comment that shows for everyone to see, either, in the chat window.

You can go to the item and click “Ask the seller a question” at the top right. That should show the seller which item you have a question about. If you use the “Make an offer” option it will give the impression you are making an offer. Maybe I am misunderstanding what you did.

I thought I did it correctly; the process should be idiot-proof.

To Answer Brilliantly

Remember these tips:

  • Use links to other sources to support your opinions
  • Use examples where possible
  • Put yourself in the inquirers shoes: what extra info would be helpful?

Should I post a comment or an answer?

You can only post one answer, so make it count. Maybe your reply is more fitting as a comment instead?

Post an answer for:

  • Replies that directly and specifically answer the original question

Post a comment for:

  • "Thanks," "Me too," "I agree," or "Works for me" types of replies
  • When you would like the original poster to provide more details
  • When you have more to add to someone else's question or answer
