I have lots of barbies and they look like the older ones but I have no idea how to price them. How can you tell if they are older ones that might be more collectible?

The older, more collectible Barbies are marked on their butts instead of their backs. Ignore all 1964 dates, as that is the patent date of the body, and not the date of the doll. Even new ones have that date. You can send me pics and I’ll try to help you…

Barbies take some study. All the ones marked 1958 on the butt are NOT from 1958. Even the first five issues of the ponytail Barbie are different. The first Barbie had white irises. The first and second barbie have bodies that turn white with age. They have soft bangs, while # 5 has stiff curly bangs. I thought 1966 was the date that the body was changed. However, now a days, even the ones from the 70’s are collectible so you need to research the face and the clothing if they have any on them. The vintage Barbies, that are still bringing in the best prices, have Japan on the bottom of their feet.

I recommend a good book and a magnifying class. My favorite book for older Barbie dolls is “The Ultimate Barbie Doll Book” by Marcie Melillo.

I too didn’t know that the patent date is of the body only. Thank you for that information which is helpful for me too.
