Help.. i need help identifying and valuing this vintage bank

![URL removed]
My husband purchased a box of items (a very heavy box lol) at an auction and this was in the bottom- unmentioned in the sale. The bank is likely cast iron, very heavy at approximately 10 pounds. It has the colonial on it, a cannon and a ship – you place the coin in front of the cannon (after pulling back the latch) and when you hit the “trigger” it shoots the coin into the side of the ship (which in turn pops back as if hit.) The side of the bank itself says “I have not yet begun to fight” I believe this is a depiction of the battle in which John Paul Jones battled the HMS Serapis during the revolutionary war. I cannot find this anywhere online so I need help with the actual name of the product or manufacturer (or something) and if possible a tentative value….. please please please and THANKS a ton :O)

The bad [URL removed] It is a franklin mint piece. Franklin mint has made a business out of creating collectables out of whole cloth, then mass producing them. The problem with that is that they do not start out with much value, and they tend to not retain value.

The Good news. It appears to be a good condition mechanical bank with attractive subject matter. John paul jones has a small collector following, but those that do collect him, are rabid about it. Mechanical bank followers are a bit easier to come across. Naval and revolutionary war collectors are even easier to find. All of these people will be interested in owning something like that.

I would value that bank at $150-$300 dollars based on condition and subject matter. In an auction setting, it could go even higher. Whoever picked up the one from the goodwill site got a great deal. Because that item crosses over into a number of different collectable categories, you should not have trouble selling it. Good find, and good luck with the sale!

What a cool bank!

First link (worthpoint) says it’s a Franklin Mint piece.
