Vintage woven purse, is it nantucket?

As I was checking out of the thrift store today, I noticed this purse across the counter and added it to my purchases.

It looks like a Nantucket style, no scrimshaw on top or anything. I am wondering if anyone knows of a way to authenticate a hand woven basket. There is no signature on the wooden bottom. Thanks!

Sorry I can’t help but wanted to say how gorgeous it is! But did find this item, it’s similar. [URL removed]

I can say that China is really doing a great job at making these. right down to the scrimshaw.

Unless its checked in person there is no way to really verify its authentic.

Also, trying tapping a drinking glass on the knobs on the side to know if its also glass breakable? I’ve seen many baskets with glass knobs made in china. When I first saw it, I thought it was a bike basket.
Anyway, good luck!

Thanks for sending the link, checking that out and the museum website you sent me and emailing a crafter from nantucketbaskets.com. Hopefully someone will surface with definitive info.

Thanks, Barn. I did some chair caning a while back and it feels like real cane. I’d be curious to know of what the knobs on the side are made.

Update

Good news, the person from the basket company on Nantucket emailed back and verified it was not an import and hand woven, don’t know the maker though.

Thanks all for your help!

Nantucket purses have a signature on the bottom wood and a whale bone figurals latch on top if antique (plastic on newer). i will find you a picture.

this is a newer one. you could call it nantucket like or possible, since it is similar to the new unadorned ones
